"Topo-Bains" focuses on the extension of a New York City urban bathhouse. The turn of the 20th century saw ‘hydro-therapy’ as an integral part of social reform, leading to the creation of the city’s early public bathhouses. Regarding today’s hygienic and health issues, the impact of a global pandemic forces us to consider new ways to occupy public spaces while preventing contamination. The project site sits in Crotona Park in the Bronx, NY. Crotona Pool was built in 1934 and is one of the largest public pools in NYC. It can hold a capacity of 10,000 people. The location of the public pool/bathhouse is meant to serve surrounding lower-income families. The rolling hill topography of the park influences the behavior of the roof of the new bathhouse. At the same time, the unusual organic geometry of the overall building organization contrasts with the orthogonal layout of the preexisting bathhouse.
