"Extended Ground" (mid-point) is a community center located in Rockaway Beach. This project aims to intertwine indoor and outdoor spaces through visual and physical thresholds to reinforce the bond between the user and nature. Programmatically linking the classrooms and kitchens with the gardens to cultivate a learning center that focuses on the natural world. The ground maintains the connection between the building and the site. The choreographed topography of the ground is primarily to defend against flooding. After the detrimental impact of Hurricane Sandy (20,12), it is vital to consider the building's resistance to flooding and its mobility to transform into an emergency shelter. Moreover, the ground intertwines the internal and external landscape. The landscape facilitates procession through the site and generates moments of reveal, while the porosity of the ground helps mediate the effects of the flood.
